COMMUNITY SERVICE OF MATHEMATICS STUDY PROGRAM TANJUNGPURA UNIVERSITY: “IMPROVING MATHEMATICAL LITERACY THROUGH PROBLEM-SOLVING TRAINING WITH MATHEMATICAL APPLICATIONS AT SMA MUHAMMADIYAH 1 PONTIANAK”
On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, the Mathematics Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Tanjungpura University (UNTAN) Pontianak held a community service activity in the form of a Workshop "Improving Mathematical Literacy Through Problem-Solving Training with Mathematical Applications," which was held at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak. This activity aims to introduce the Mathematics Study Program, provide knowledge about artificial intelligence (Artificial Intelligence/AI) and socialize the Mathematics Competition (KOMET) to students and teachers at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak. This event was attended by 35 students and 3 teachers from SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak, accompanied by 10 lecturers and 8 students of the Mathematics study program, FMIPA UNTAN, who acted as speakers and facilitators. This activity began with an opening by Suryani as the host. It continued with remarks from Mr Deni Hamdani and the head of the Mathematics Study Program, namely Dr. Bayu Prihandono, S.Si., M.Sc.
In the introductory session of the Mathematics Study Program, Dr. Bayu Prihandono conveyed information related to the vision and mission of the study program, the curriculum offered, and career prospects for graduates of the Mathematics Study Program. He also conveyed the importance of mastering modern technology, such as artificial intelligence in the world of education and industry today and emphasized that graduates of the Mathematics Study Program not only play a role in the academic field but are also able to contribute to the development of technology such as AI which is increasingly relevant in this digital era.
After the introductory session of the Study Program, the event continued with a presentation on artificial intelligence in mathematics learning delivered directly by Mr. Fransiskus Fran, M, Si., a lecturer in the Mathematics Study Program, FMIPA UNTAN. On this occasion, Mr. Fran explained the basics of artificial intelligence, starting from the concept of machine learning to its application in mathematics learning applications. He also showed several examples of AI applications that students and teachers can use to help solve math problems, provide interactive explanations, and invite students to practice directly using AI-based applications.
In addition, the event also included the socialization of the Mathematics Competition (KOMET), a competition held by the Mathematics Student Association of the Mathematics Study Program, FMIPA UNTAN to increase students' interest and talent in mathematics. This socialization is expected to foster a competitive spirit and interest in learning mathematics and critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are very relevant in the digital era.
With the implementation of this activity, the Mathematics Study Program, FMIPA UNTAN, shows its commitment to supporting the development of education in Pontianak City, especially in utilizing artificial intelligence technology to improve the quality of mathematics learning in schools.
